As a result of the strong and sound economic policies of the Provincial government, the British Columbia Development/Construction Industry has boomed over the past few years. This good news has led to some capacity problems in the sector – especially around the supply of labour.
To address the skilled worker shortage in the Province, the Ministry of Community, Aboriginal and Women’s Services will make use of the Provincial Nominee Program to recruit immigrants to work in B.C. in specialized positions, like construction, where there are shortages. It can also be accessed to retain immigrants currently working in the Province.
A person nominated under the program will benefit from the faster processing of their permanent residence application (six months instead of the usual two to three years).
As part of the Nominee Program, the Ministry will be attending the upcoming Emigrate Fair in London, England between March 18th and 20th 2005. The Conference is the largest emigration event in the World where thousands of skilled workers will be attending to find out about emigration opportunities in Canada and other countries.
Although Ministry officials will be there to identify potential candidates for the Provincial Nominee Program, there are opportunities for construction companies to directly participate in and recruit at the event.
UDI encourages its members and their affiliates to take advantage of these opportunities.
